Recently we received an Orbee-Tuff® RecycleBall®, designed by Planet Dog, for review!

These Tuff little balls are made out of 100% recycled materials leftover from the manufacturing of other dog toys that would otherwise be tossed into the trash, and end up harming the environment.  We certainly LOVE that!

Here’s what we…well, what Bubbs thought about it…

I knew when I opened the package and looked inside I knew this review was not going to well.  I was so excited to have the opportunity to review a great product (and we are BIG fans of the Orbee-Tuff on our blog); however, I knew Bubbs Da Boo would not be…and if he was excited, it wouldn’t last long with this one.

You see, Bubbs the Chi is extremely particular on the kinds of toys he likes and rubber ones, recycled or not, he just gives you that nose in the air, won’t look you the eye, “What the heck is this?  You expect me to play with THIS?!” behavior.

So, after I opened the package and realized this was going to be tough, I called him over in the highest-pitched voice I could muster.  I heard his tags jingle as he JUMPED off the couch…I continued to speak excitedly as I pulled the ball out the package and tossed it across the floor, he looked after it…looked at me…”Go check it out!”…he trotted over leisurely, sniffed…looked at me…”Bring it here! <Squeaky voice>”…sniffed it…came running back…without Orbee in tow.  Grrrreat.

He immediately trots over to his toy box for something more interesting as he sees you are ready to play, but definitely NOT with that insignificant purple thing sitting there in the middle of the room.  You see, he prefers the soft, squeaky, crinkle toys he can toss around and be mean to, not something hard and just rolls around on the ground.  BOR-RING!

So I tried to entice him some more by getting down on the floor…keep in mind, I have my heavy DSLR camera around my neck and in one hand to take a picture, to roll it around, tried to play keep-away…”It’s mine!” etc.  Nothing.  I saw nothing but boredom in his furry face.  “You woke me up from my afternoon nap for this!?”

Then I got an idea!

I noticed each end had small holes large enough to put some small treats inside, and if you’re a dog owner you know dogs will do ANYTHING for a tasty treat!  I ran to the kitchen, and popped a few pieces….okay, lets be honest.…I filled the ball with his Purina ProPlan® Shredded Blend, some pieces of Pupcorn®, some Cesar® Softies®, and there may have been half of my lunch in there too.  But it worked.

He was intrigued as he tried to pry the treats and food out of the holes.  Some of the pieces came out easily, while others did not as he pawed the Orbee around the living room.  I was able to get a few pictures of him with it.  Once a few minutes passed without a treat falling out, despite some still lodged inside, he quit.  Bored once again, and I knew it was over.  He’d never have interest in it again.

Don’t get me wrong, Bubbs plays, and he plays a lot.  He just prefers to chase fuzzy, squeaky, crinkle-type toys.  He plays fetch; he’ll bring it back and beg for it to be thrown again.  Rubber balls just aren’t his cup of chow, and if they aren’t good enough for him, some other little dogs may feel the same way, especially those who do prefer softer toys.

So….despite my little Chihuahua being a nose-turner to FREE toys, I’m going to give the best review of the Orbee-Tuff I can, based on my other knowledge of dogs, dog toys, and the needs of other dog owners.

Pros:

Durability: I give the Orbee a 4 out of 4.  It is extremely durable and I can definitely see it lasting a long life after many extensive teeth-chewing sessions.

Flexibility: I give the Orbee a 4 out of 4.  It is a very flexible rubber ball and I contribute this characteristic to how well it holds up against lots of teeth and rough play.

Boyancy: I give the Orbee a 4 out of 4.  Will be great for those dogs who enjoy a nice dive into the pool, lake or river!

Construction: I give the Orbee a 4 out of 4.  I LOVE the fact that this ball is made of 100% post-production material.  It’s great for the environment and I’m all about anything that is eco-friendly.

Cons:

Interest: I give the Orbee a 2 out of 4.  As some dogs may be able to entertain themselves with a ball for a lengthy period of time, some may not.  Even with treat-stuffing holes (although I’m pretty sure those holes are there only so it’s able to float), it just may not work long enough to keep a chewer at bay from the furniture while home alone.

Taste: I give the Orbee a 1 out of 4.  The Orbee claims that it is ‘minty’, but it must not be very tasty because it did not entice my dog into play, or even interest him enough to lick it unless a treat was stick inside.

Size: I give the Orbee a 2 out of 4.  I’m not sure about the different sizes the Orbee-Tuff comes in, but if this is the smallest size available, it is just slightly too big for small dogs under 12lbs.  The size we received would have been perfect for a dog approximately 15lbs to 40lbs.

Overall, I give the Orbee-Tuff RecycleBALL from Planet Dog a 2 out of 4.  It’s a great durable ball that is great for chewers and medium-sized to larger dogs; however, the Orbee is slightly too large for a small-breed dog under 12lbs. to carry comfortably in their mouth, and lacks the enticing factor a ‘too-smart-for-their-own good’ toy breed requires for stimulation.
