DOG TREAT RECALL EXPANDED

We recently posted about Merrick’s Recall on their Beef Filet Square dog treats.  We just learned that the company announced on Aug. 3 they are expanding to include additional cases and another LOT# of these dog treats as well.

The initial recall was for 86 cases of their Beef Filet Squares with the ITEM# 60016 and LOT# 10084TL7. and expiration date of March 24, 2012.  The new expanded recall includes 83 cases of their 10 oz. packages of “Texas Hold’ems” with the ITEM# 60016 and LOT# 10127, and expiration date of May 6, 2012.  Again, this recall is due to possible Salmonella contamination.

There have been quite a few dog food, dog treats, and supplement recalls lately:

• Nature’s Variety announced in March
• IAMS cat food announced in June
• Natural Balance announced in June
• Merrick announced in July (and now expanded)
• United Pet Group announced in July
• IAMS & Eukanuba dog foods announced in July

Again, according to Veterinary Practice News:

The recalled Texas Hold’ems treats were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the United States. Those companies have been notified and have activated their recall procedures, according to Merrick. No illnesses related to the recalled product have been reported.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, according to the company. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms.

Humans can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or surfaces exposed to the recalled product, according to the company. Symptoms in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and headache.

Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to infection, according to the company.

Consumers who have purchased 10-ounce packages of Texas Hold’ems are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-664-7387, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT.

DOG TREAT RECALL

On June 2, 2010 Merrick issued a RECALL due to possible Salmonella contamination on 86 cases of their Beef Filet Squares 10-oz packages, that have been shipped nationwide.  This recall pertains to specific LOT #10084TL7 with the expiration date of March 24, 2012.

Pets showing signs of Salmonella poisoning may exhibit lethargy and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.  Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms.

And according to Veterinary Practice News (which I was completely not aware of)…

Merrick recalled 10-ounce packages of its Beef Filet Squares with a different lot number for the same reason in January. In this new case, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had collected a sample of the Beef Filet Squares, lot number 10084TL7, from a retail store. The sample tested positive for salmonella, the company reported.

I’d stay away from these treats until they get this sorted out.
