DOG TREAT RECALL EXPANDED

We recently posted about Merrick’s Recall on their Beef Filet Square dog treats. We just learned that the company announced on Aug. 3 they are expanding to include additional cases and another LOT# of these dog treats as well.

The initial recall was for 86 cases of their Beef Filet Squares with the ITEM# 60016 and LOT# 10084TL7. and expiration date of March 24, 2012. The new expanded recall includes 83 cases of their 10 oz. packages of “Texas Hold’ems” with the ITEM# 60016 and LOT# 10127, and expiration date of May 6, 2012. Again, this recall is due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Again, according to Veterinary Practice News:

The recalled Texas Hold’ems treats were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the United States. Those companies have been notified and have activated their recall procedures, according to Merrick. No illnesses related to the recalled product have been reported.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, according to the company. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms.

Humans can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or surfaces exposed to the recalled product, according to the company. Symptoms in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and headache.

Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to infection, according to the company.

Consumers who have purchased 10-ounce packages of Texas Hold’ems are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-664-7387, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT.

IAMS & Eukanuba Dog Food RECALL!

In late July, Proctor & Gamble, the manufacturer of IAMS® & Eukanuba® pet foods, issued a RECALL on lots of BOTH of these brands, and keeps expanding the list to include other lots due to possible Salmonella contamination.

This is a HUGE recall that includes Veterinary Diets produced by the company.

The food affected by this recall are as follows:

ALL IAMS® Veterinary Diet Dry Formulas (and sizes)
ALL Eukanuba® Naturally Wild® Formulas (and sizes)
ALL Eukanuba® Pure® Formulas (and sizes)
ALL Eukanuba® Custom Care Sensitive Skin® Formula (and sizes)

These foods were sold in veterinary clinics and pet specialty stores across the United States and Canada. Currently, no canned foods, biscuits, or supplements are included.

According to Veterinary Practice News:

The recalled products are manufactured in a single, specialized facility, according to P&G. The company reported that some of the products made at the facility have the potential for salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at the facility.

No illnesses have been reported, according to the company.

Pets with salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain, according to P&G. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

P&G urges pet owners to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms.

People handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product, according to P&G.

Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider, according to the company.

If you have ANY bags of food involved in this recall, dispose of them immediately! Handling the contaminated food can transmit Salmonella poisoning to humans, and should be taken VERY seriously.

We just recently posted about a coupon for $8 off a bag of Eukanuba® Puppy, and as far as I can read, this food was not produced in the same facility as those involved in the recall, thus we’ll leave the post up and running for now. However, if the list expands to include this food, we’ll let you know.

UPDATE: We received an email from P&G this morning (8/6/10) asking us to please remove the image we used in this post, and to use one of theirs due to the inaccurate display of foods NOT involved in the recall. On June 2, 2010 Merrick issued a RECALL due to possible Salmonella contamination on 86 cases of their Beef Filet Squares 10-oz packages, that have been shipped nationwide. This recall pertains to specific LOT #10084TL7 with the expiration date of March 24, 2012.

Pets showing signs of Salmonella poisoning may exhibit lethargy and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms.

And according to Veterinary Practice News (which I was completely not aware of)…

Merrick recalled 10-ounce packages of its Beef Filet Squares with a different lot number for the same reason in January. In this new case, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had collected a sample of the Beef Filet Squares, lot number 10084TL7, from a retail store. The sample tested positive for salmonella, the company reported.

I’d stay away from these treats until they get this sorted out.

Nature’s Variety Food Recall & Coupons

I was going through some emails this morning and came across one from Nature’s Variety® that stated that they are recalling some of their food on March 8th. They recalled all their Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula products with a ‘Best If Used By’ date of 2/5/11 out of precaution, their Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with the ‘Best If Used By’ dates of 10/29/10 and 11/9/10 due to the possibility of Salmonella contamination. :(

This does not include any of the Chicken Formulas that have a ‘Best If Used By’ date AFTER 2/5/11.
