Easter Dog Safety Tips

Tomorrow is Easter!
For those of you who celebrate this springtime occasion, keep in mind that it is a holiday that can be harmful to your dog, if you’re not cautious, just like all the others. Thanks to Pets911 and the Humane Society, I have compiled a list of safety precautions as you, your family, and your canines celebrate!
Easter Safety Tips:
Keep all candy and chocolate out of reach! Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and sugar is just plain bad! Period. Stay away from spring flower bouquets. There are a lot of flowers that are poisonous to your canine. See one of my previous posts about harmful plants HERE. Watch out for the Easter basket grass gobbler! That plastic green grass that is often a must for those baskets can seem tasty when it smells like chocolate and candy! However, if it is ingested, can cause an intestinal blockage that will most likely end in an expensive trip to the vet.- Make a map of those eggs, and keep the pets inside until all of them are found. Whether you use the colorful plastic eggs and fill them with candy and surprises, or use hard-boiled eggs, BOTH kinds can be harmful if ingested. Again, those plastic eggs can lead to an intestinal blockage, and can be irresistible to chew (especially when they get a surprise inside!). Hard-boiled eggs, if not found and are left to rot, will surely attract your dog to be eaten and you’ll just end up in diarrhea/vomiting town. I find that it’s best to create a quick map to those that are hidden in not-so-easy-to-find places.
If your canine appears to be stressed with all your Easter activities, try and find a safe and quiet place for him/her to relax. If you think it is possible that your dog may have ingested something harmful, such as chocolate or plastic, contact your veterinarian immediately, or call Animal Poison Control at (800) 426-4435.
